Pak

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. Characterizing a container or package that holds items or information
  2. Relating to the act of preparing or wrapping something for storage or shipment
  3. Associated with a group of items gathered together for distribution or sale

Etymology: The spelling "pak" is simply an alternative form of "pack," and it is the older-looking sibling that shows what the word started as: a bundle. The noun comes from Middle English "pak" and "pakke," which drew on both Old English and Middle Dutch, and both ultimately trace to a Proto-Germanic word meaning "bundle" or "pack." The same root gives Dutch "pak," German "Pack," and Swedish "packe," all still meaning a bundle or package. The sense of a container or package holding items or information grew naturally out of that original idea of a tied-up bundle. The verb "to pack," from Middle English "pakken," developed from the noun in the same way, which is why packing a bag and a pack of cards share one ancestor.
