Etymology: "Padrona" is the Italian feminine of "padrone," meaning master, employer or owner, and both trace back to Latin "patronus," originally a former master or protector of a freed slave, and ultimately to "pater," father. The Latin root gave English "patron," which kept the sense of protector or sponsor, while Italian pushed the word toward ownership and command, so an Italian "padrone" was historically the boss of a household, shop or ship, not simply a benefactor. English borrowed the Italian form in the 19th century, mostly in reference to Italian contexts such as the padrone system, in which immigrant workers were often employed through a labour boss who controlled their wages and housing.
