Etymology: Ozone itself came first. The gas was named in 1840 by the German chemist Christian Friedrich Schönbein, who coined "ozone" from the Greek "ozein", meaning "to smell", because of its sharp odour. The verb "ozonate" is a plain formation: the noun "ozone" with the suffix "-ate", a common verb-forming ending, so to ozonate something is to treat it with ozone. "Ozonated" is the past tense and past participle of that verb, so it describes water or air that has already been treated. The word therefore inherits its whole meaning from the gas, and its history is that of a chemical name turned into an action.
