Oviraptorosaurs

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A group of bird-like theropod dinosaurs characterized by their distinctive beak-like jaws and often associated with eggs; classified within the larger clade of maniraptoran dinosaurs and notable for their unique skeletal features
  2. A clade of small to medium-sized feathered theropods known for their toothless, parrot-like skulls and presumed omnivorous or herbivorous diets; these dinosaurs are recognized for their brooding behavior involving egg care
  3. Feathered dinosaur relatives distinguished by their specialized jaw structures resembling a bird’s beak, part of the broader maniraptoran group and historically linked to fossilized nesting sites suggesting parental care behaviors

Etymology: The first specimen named Oviraptor was found lying over a nest of eggs, and its discoverers concluded it had been raiding the nest. Its name, from Latin "ovum" (egg) and "raptor" (robber), means "egg thief." Later finds showed the eggs were its own, and the animal had been sitting on them. The ending "-saur" comes from Greek "sauros," meaning lizard, and is used in dinosaur names generally. The group takes its name from Oviraptor, so a misreading of one animal's behaviour gave the whole lineage its label. The plural simply adds "-s" to the singular form.
