Etymology: The verb "overweigh" is an old English formation: "over-" attached to "weigh," meaning to outweigh or exceed in weight. Its earliest surviving appearance is in the Ancrene Wisse, a Middle English guide for anchoresses, where a writer says that love "ouerweið" (overweighs) other concerns. That sense is the heart of the word: the verb was used less for measuring a physical object than for one thing tipping the balance against another, so the figurative idea of pressing down more heavily was in place from the start. "Overweighed" is simply the past tense and past participle of "overweigh," so it describes something that has already exceeded another in weight. The past form follows the regular pattern of "weigh," with "-ed" added to the stem.
