Overvolting
Part of speech: noun, verb, adjective
Definitions
- Applying or subjecting to a higher than normal electrical voltage ; increasing voltage beyond recommended limits to equipment or a circuit ; operating an electrical device under excessive voltage conditions
- The act of raising voltage above standard specifications to enhance performance or test durability ; exposing electrical components to voltages exceeding their usual capacity ; causing an increase in electric potential beyond safe operational levels
- Elevating the electric charge to levels higher than designed ; intentionally or accidentally providing surplus voltage to electronic systems ; pushing voltage input beyond typical operating parameters to assess effects or improve function
Etymology: "Overvolting" is the present participle and gerund of a verb formed in English from the prefix "over-" and "volt", the unit of electrical potential named after the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta. The base word "volt" is the building block here, and "over-" adds the sense of exceeding a limit: to overvolt something is to push its voltage past what it was designed to handle. The prefix does most of the work. English has long attached "over-" to nouns and verbs to mean "too much" or "beyond the normal amount," so "overheat," "overload," and "overclock" follow the same pattern. Overvolting belongs to the same family of coinages, and its meaning follows directly from its parts: a device or circuit is run with more voltage than its specification allows.
Synonyms: overpowering voltage, excess voltage
