Etymology: "Overskill" is a straightforward compound: the prefix "over-", meaning beyond or in excess, joined to "skill". The prefix is native English, descended from Old English "ofer", and it carries the sense of going past a limit, as in "overdo" or "overcharge." "Skill" has a less obvious past. It was borrowed from Old Norse "skil", which meant distinction or discernment, the ability to tell one thing from another, rather than the practical know-how it denotes now. "Overskill" therefore describes a surplus of that practical ability beyond what a task or job requires.
Synonyms: excess skill, overqualification, superfluous skill
