Overreplicate

  2. To make more copies or reproductions of something than are required for the purpose at hand
  3. To reproduce or repeat something to an unnecessary or excessive extent

Etymology: "Overreplicate" is a plain compound: the prefix "over-" (meaning excessively or too much) attached to "replicate," which comes from Latin "replicare," to fold back or unfold, and so to repeat or reproduce. Put together, it means to replicate too much or beyond what is needed. The interesting part lies in the parent word. "Replicate" once carried the sense of folding back on itself, a literal idea from the Latin verb's root "plicare," to fold, that gradually shifted toward copying or reproducing. Attaching "over-" to that later sense produced a word that describes copying something more times than necessary, a meaning that rests entirely on the modern, reproductive sense of its base.
