Etymology: "Overpost" is a plain compound, built from the prefix "over-" (meaning excessively or beyond a proper amount) and "post," used in the sense of publishing a message or item online or on a notice board. Put together, the word means to post too much, or to post more than is wanted or appropriate. The verb "post" itself has a much older and more physical history, coming from the idea of a fixed pole or pillar, and later of a stationed mail carrier, so the "over-" prefix has been attached to a word that already had several layers of meaning. Its appearance reflects the growth of internet forums, message boards and social platforms, where people could publish content in volume and where "too much posting" became a recognised complaint.
