Etymology: "Overpadded" is the past participle and past tense of "overpad," a verb formed from the prefix "over-" and the verb "pad." The prefix adds the sense of excess, so to overpad something is to pad it more than is needed. "Pad" itself goes back to the idea of a soft stuffing or bundle, and in English it has long meant to fill or cushion something with extra material, whether that is a garment, a chair, or a piece of writing stretched with unnecessary words. Because "over-" is a productive English prefix, it can attach to many verbs to mean "too much" or "beyond the proper amount," so "overpad" follows an ordinary pattern rather than a special history. Its meaning is therefore transparent from its parts, and the word has no separate story of its own beyond that combination.
