Etymology: "Overliven" is a transparent English formation: the prefix "over-," meaning "too much" or "excessively," attached to "liven," which means to make lively. "Liven" itself was formed from the adjective "lively," which has roots in the Old English "lif" (life), so the whole word traces back to the idea of being full of life. English speakers have long built verbs this way, adding "over-" to existing verbs to mean doing something to excess, as with "overcook" or "overdo."
