Etymology: "Overgorges" is the third-person singular form of "overgorge," a verb built from the prefix "over-" and the verb "gorge." The base is the more interesting half. "Gorge" comes from Old French "gorge," meaning throat, and that French word goes back to Latin "gurges," a whirlpool or abyss. The idea of a throat as a channel for swallowing gave the English verb its sense of stuffing food down, while the noun "gorge," meaning a narrow ravine, comes from the same root through the image of a steep, swallowing cleft in rock. Adding "over-" intensifies the sense into excess: to gorge beyond what is comfortable or sensible. The construction is a straightforward English formation, so the prefix does the work of turning ordinary gorging into the inordinate kind.
