Etymology: "Overcooled" is a plain compound: the prefix "over-" attached to "cooled," the past participle of "cool." The prefix "over-" comes from Old English "ofer," meaning "above, beyond, too much," and it has carried that sense of excess onto countless verbs and adjectives, so "overcooled" describes something that has been chilled beyond the intended point. The participle "cooled" sits at the end of a longer chain. "Cool" descends from Old English "cōlian," which goes back to a Proto-West Germanic base "kōl-" linked to the ancient Germanic idea of coolness. The "-ed" ending is the Old English past-tense and participle suffix, which attached to "cōlian" and gave us the form "cooled" we use today.
