Etymology: "Ovarioles" is the plural of "ovariole", a term for one of the tubular units that make up an insect's ovary. Each ovariole is a thin string of developing egg chambers, so an insect's ovary is built from many of these tubes working in parallel rather than from a single egg-producing sac. The word is formed from "ovary" plus the suffix "-ole", a modern scientific ending taken from Latin "-olus", used to form diminutives, meaning "little" or "small". An ovariole is therefore a small ovary, one of several units that together form the whole organ. Because the suffix is a deliberate coinage from existing parts, the term reflects the anatomy it names rather than any older folk usage.
