Outyielded

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. Produced a greater harvest or output than another crop, plant, or source had done under the same conditions
  2. Surpassed a rival in the amount of crop, product, or return it generated over a given period
  3. Generated more yield or returns than a comparable competitor, field, or method managed to achieve

Etymology: "Outyielded" is the past tense and past participle of "outyield," a verb formed from the prefix "out-" and the verb "yield." The prefix attaches a sense of surpassing or exceeding, so to outyield something is to produce more of a crop, return, or result than another party does. "Yield" itself goes back to Old English "gieldan," meaning to pay or repay, which is why a field's yield and a payment of tax share a root in the older sense of giving back what is owed.

Synonyms: outproduced, outperformed, surpassed
