Etymology: "Outyield" is a plain compound: the prefix "out-" joined to "yield." The "yield" half traces back to Old English "gieldan," meaning to pay or repay, and the sense of producing a return or harvest grew out of that idea of paying back. "Out-" in this sense means "surpassing" or "beyond," so to outyield something is to produce more of a crop, return, or result than another. The construction follows a familiar pattern in English, where "out-" attaches to a verb to mean doing something better or more than someone else, as in "outrun," "outlast," or "outperform." Because "outyield" is formed transparently from those two parts, its meaning can be worked out from its components without any special history behind it.
