Etymology: "Outwinning" is the present participle and gerund of "outwin," a verb that goes back to Middle English "outwinnen." The verb is built from the prefix "out-," meaning beyond or surpassing, attached to "win," so the core idea is getting the better of someone or something, or reaching a goal ahead of others. The base verb "win" has an older sense that the modern form has largely lost. Old English "winnan" meant to struggle, toil, or fight, and the notion of prevailing in a contest grew out of that effort. "Outwinnen" therefore carries the sense of struggling past an opponent until you come out on top, which is why the participle reads naturally as "winning over others."
