Etymology: "Perform" began in Old French as "parfournir," meaning to furnish completely or finish off, from "par-" (thoroughly) and "fournir" (to provide). English kept that sense of carrying something through to completion before it came to mean staging a play or doing a trick. Prefixing "out-," meaning beyond or surpassing, yields "outperform," to do better than others. The rest of the word is built from familiar parts. "-able" comes through Old French from Latin "-abilis," meaning capable of being, so the adjective describes something that can be done in a way that exceeds others. The adverb ending "-ly" descends from Old English "-lice," the same suffix found in "quickly" and "boldly," and it turns the adjective into a word describing manner.
