Etymology: "Outgave" is the past tense of "outgive," a rare English verb built from the prefix "out-" ("beyond, surpassing") and "give." "Give" itself is a Norse borrowing: Old English had "giefan," but the Old Norse "gefa" displaced much of its use in the Middle Ages, and the Norse form is the one that survives.
