Etymology: The Italian "osteria" is a close cousin of the English "hostry," and both trace back to the same Latin word, "hospitium," meaning lodging or hospitality. Through the Latin path, "hospitium" gave Italian a word for a place offering food and drink to travellers, while English took a parallel line that produced "hostry," an old word for an inn. The two words are doublets: separate borrowings or descendants of one ancestor that split apart over time. English later borrowed "osteria" directly from Italian, reviving that Italian sense of a modest eating and drinking house. Where "hostry" faded into archaic use, "osteria" kept the flavour of a casual, local establishment, which is why it is now used for small, informal restaurants serving regional dishes and house wines.
