"Osteo-" comes from Greek "osteon," meaning "bone," and "-petrosis" comes from "petra," meaning "stone," so the name literally means "bone-stone-ness." The Greek elements were chosen by 20th-century clinicians to describe bone that has become hard and dense, almost like rock. The adjective "osteopetrotic" is formed by adding the suffix "-tic," which turns the noun into a word meaning "relating to" or "characterized by." It describes things connected with the disease, such as a patient with osteopetrotic bones or a finding on a radiograph. Like the noun, it is a technical coinage rather than an ancient term, so the Greeks themselves never used it.
