Etymology: "Osteonal" is a plain adjective built from two parts: "osteon," a term for the cylindrical units that make up compact bone, and the suffix "-al," which turns a noun into an adjective meaning "relating to" or "of the kind of." Put together, it describes whatever belongs to or characterises those units. The first half, "osteon," is itself a modern technical coinage built from Greek roots, with "osteo-" drawn from the Greek "osteon," meaning "bone." Anatomists needed a precise name for the concentric, tube-like structures in dense bone, and this label gave them one. The adjective "osteonal" then follows the same pattern as countless other scientific terms formed by adding "-al" to a noun, such as "cortical" from "cortex."
