The second, "-itis", is the suffix Greek physicians used to name inflammation, as in arthritis (joint inflammation) and tonsillitis. Put together, the word literally means "bone inflammation," which is exactly what the term describes. The suffix's logic is what makes this word easy to decode: once you know "-itis" signals inflammation, any condition named with it tells you the affected part right at the front.
