Osseointegrated

Part of speech: adjective

Definitions

  1. Fused directly with living bone tissue, as with a dental or orthopedic implant that is anchored into the skeleton without intervening soft tissue
  2. Joined firmly to the surrounding bone so that the implant becomes part of the skeletal structure rather than sitting on top of it
  3. Describing a prosthetic device or implant that has bonded intimately with the bone around it, allowing stable load-bearing attachment

Etymology: Osseointegrated is the past participle of osseointegrate, formed from the combining form "osseo-", from Latin "os" meaning "bone", plus "integrate", from Latin "integrare", "to make whole." Together they describe a bond in which living bone grows directly onto the surface of an implant, without an intervening layer of fibrous tissue. The "osseo-" element is the one that does the specialist work here. It appears in terms like osseous and ossify, all tied to bone, so the word reads almost literally as "made whole with bone." The "integrate" part carries the older sense of joining separate parts into one unified whole, which is why the term fits so well: the implant and the bone become a single structure rather than two pieces held together.
