Etymology: "Ornamented" is the past participle of the verb "ornament", which was formed from the noun, not the other way round. The noun came into Middle English from Old French "ornement", itself from Latin "ornamentum", meaning equipment, apparatus, furniture, or trappings as well as adornment and embellishment. That broad Latin sense is a clue: an ornament was originally anything fitted out or equipped, and decoration was only one of its meanings. The Latin noun grew from "ornāre", "to equip or adorn", the root behind the English word "adorn". So "ornamented" carries the idea of having been fitted out with extra trappings, with the sense of being equipped resting on the same base as the modern sense of decoration.
