Etymology: "Orientalizing" is the present participle of "orientalize," which combines "oriental," the adjective for things from the East, with the suffix "-ize," meaning to make or make into. To orientalize something is to give it eastern character, whether by decorating it with eastern motifs or by portraying a subject in the manner of the East. The suffix does most of the work here. "-ize" entered English through Latin and Greek roots as a general-purpose verb-maker, so the same ending appears in words like "modernize" and "civilize." Attaching it to "oriental" produces a verb meaning to render something in an eastern style, and its participle form describes the act as it happens.
