Etymology: "Oophagous" is a modern scientific coinage built from two Greek elements: "oo-", from Greek "ōion" meaning "egg", and "-phagous", from Greek "phagos" meaning "eating" or "eater". Put together, the pieces describe an animal that eats eggs, and the term is used mainly in zoology to classify species whose diet or developing young depend on eggs. The Greek roots are ancient, but the adjective itself is not. Like many technical terms built from classical parts, it was assembled deliberately by scientists rather than inherited from Greek writers, so no ancient Greek speaker ever described an animal as "oophagous." Its use is confined to specialist descriptions of feeding habits, such as embryos that consume unfertilised eggs or other eggs in the same clutch.
