Etymology: "Oomycete" is built from two Greek elements that describe what the organisms look like under the microscope. The first, "oo-", comes from Greek "ōion", meaning "egg", a reference to the egg-shaped reproductive cells these organisms produce. The second, "-mycete", comes from Greek "mūkēs", meaning "fungus," which explains why they were long grouped with fungi despite being quite different. That grouping is the surprising part. Oomycetes were once classed among the fungi because they form similar threadlike filaments and live as parasites or decomposers, but they are more closely related to brown algae and diatoms. The name thus preserves an old taxonomic assumption: the "-mycete" ending reflects a classification that modern genetics has since overturned.
