Etymology: The "oodle" in "oodles" is a noun with a surprisingly modern source: it was lifted from the ending of mixed-breed dog names. The Labradoodle, a cross between a Labrador and a poodle, set the pattern, and the "-oodle" tail was then detached and used as a freestanding word for a large quantity. The plural "oodles" is the form most people use, and it is the one that carries the sense "a huge amount," as in "oodles of time." The singular "oodle" is rarer. Once the ending had been separated from its dog-breed origin, speakers treated it as a playful unit of plenty, borrowing its bouncy sound to suggest abundance.
