Etymology: The Spanish and Portuguese spelling "onix" is a variant of English "onyx," which comes from the Greek "onyx," meaning both "fingernail" or "claw" and the banded stone. The stone takes its name from the look of its layers, which can resemble the pale crescent and edges of a nail. Greek writers used the word for this banded chalcedony, a form of quartz, and for the claw-like nails of animals and humans. The same Greek root gave the stone its name in many European languages, which is why the Spanish and Portuguese forms keep the original spelling with a single letter dropped.
