Etymology: Ancient Greek had a whole profession devoted to dreams, and this word names its practitioner. The Greek adjective "oneirokritikos" meant "fit for interpreting dreams," built from "oneiros," "dream," and "kritikos," "fit for judging." The judging element comes from "kritēs," "judge," the same root that gives English "critic." So an oneirocritic is, quite literally, a dream-critic: someone who passes judgement on what a dream means. The English word keeps that Greek sense almost unchanged, but it describes a role that was once taken seriously. Ancient dream interpreters, often working from manuals of symbols, were consulted about the meaning of visions, and the Greek word stayed close to that practical, judicial task. Its modern use is therefore a rare survival of a classical occupation, named in English through the Greek words themselves rather than through a later coinage.
