Etymology: H. L. Mencken, the American journalist and critic, is credited with coining "ombibulous," a playful alteration of an older word. The word it was built from, "omnibibulous," already existed and meant something like "drinking everything" or "imbibing all things." Mencken trimmed the middle of that word, dropping the "n" from "omn-," and the result is a term for someone fond of drinking. The shortened form keeps the sense of its parent while sounding lighter and more comic. The joke lies partly in the fact that it is a deliberately inflated, Latinate-sounding coinage applied to a very ordinary pleasure, which is typical of Mencken's taste for mock-learned vocabulary.
