Etymology: Oligaemic is built from two Greek pieces. The first, "oligos", means "few" or "little", and the second, "haima", means "blood", which appears in English as the combining form "-aemia" (in the sense of blood condition). Put together, "oligaemia" names a state of too little blood, and the adjective "oligaemic" adds the suffix "-ic", the usual English way of turning a noun into a descriptive adjective. The pattern is a familiar one in medical vocabulary. Physicians in the modern era have built many terms this way, pairing a Greek prefix with "-aemia" for blood conditions, so "oligaemic" follows the same logic as its counterparts such as "anaemic" and "polycythaemic". Its meaning is literal: a body that is oligaemic has less circulating blood volume than normal.
