Etymology: Octarchy is a plain compound: "octo-", the Greek combining form for eight, joined to "-archy", from Greek "archē", meaning rule or government. The pattern follows older coinages such as heptarchy, the name historians give to the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of early medieval England, and monarchy and oligarchy, which share the same suffix. The word is a deliberate formation built from classical parts rather than a term that was used in antiquity. Its shape tells you its meaning directly: rule by eight.
