Etymology: "Oceanauts" is the plural of "oceanaut," a word formed from "ocean" and the suffix "-naut," which comes from the Greek "nautes," meaning sailor. The suffix was modelled on "astronaut," so the word follows the same pattern as the term for a space traveller, swapping the sky for the sea. The "-naut" element was already familiar to English speakers from older words such as "argonaut," the sailor of the ship Argo in Greek myth, and "aeronaut," a balloon pilot. Adding it to "ocean" produced a term for people who go down into the deep sea, the way astronauts go up into space.
