Etymology: "Oceanaut" is a compound built from "ocean" and "-naut," a suffix taken from the Greek "nautes," meaning "sailor." The suffix reached English through "astronaut," the term for a space traveller coined in the 1920s and popularised after the Space Race began in the late 1950s. Once "astronaut" had made "-naut" familiar as a way of naming someone who travels into an unfamiliar environment, writers began attaching it to other frontiers. "Oceanaut" follows this pattern directly, substituting the sea for outer space. The new word thus describes a person who goes into the deep ocean much as an astronaut goes into orbit, and it carries that comparison in its very structure. The mid-twentieth century saw a rush of such coinages, when underwater habitats and diving saturation experiments were drawing public attention.
