Etymology: The verb "occur" once meant something closer to a clash of minds than a chance event. It was borrowed from Middle French "occurrer", which came from Latin "occurrere", a compound of "ob-" ("against") and "currere" ("to run"). The Latin sense was literal: to run to meet someone, or to run against something. From that picture of two things running into each other came the idea of meeting in argument, which is the earliest English sense. The modern meaning, something happening or turning up by chance, grew out of the Latin notion of befalling or presenting itself. The verb "occurred" is simply the past form of this verb, so its history is that of "occur" itself, a run-in that eventually came to mean an event that runs into you.
