Etymology: "Nucleating" is the present participle of "nucleate", so its story is really the story of the verb it comes from. "Nucleate" traces back to the Latin "nucleus", a diminutive of "nux", meaning "nut". The original sense was a kernel inside a shell, and the Latin word carried that literal picture of something small and dense sitting at the heart of a covering. English later borrowed the idea to describe a central point around which things collect. The verb's shift from a physical kernel to a process of gathering matter, whether in physics, chemistry, or a crystal forming in a cooling liquid, follows the same logic: a small core forms first, and growth builds outward from it. The participle simply describes that process happening as it goes.
