Etymology: "Notifying" is the present participle of "notify", which entered Middle English as "notifien", borrowed from Old French "notifier" (also spelled "notefiier"). The French verb came from Latin "notificare", meaning to make known, built from "notus" (known) and the verb-forming element "-ficare" from "facere" (to make or do). So the core idea is literally "to make known." Latin "notus" is the past participle of "noscere", to know, which is the same root behind "notice", "note" and "notion". "Notify" therefore sits in a family of words that all trace back to the act of knowing something, and "notifying" simply carries that sense of making knowledge pass from one person to another.
