Etymology: "Noticeboards" is the plural of "noticeboard," a compound of "notice" and "board." The first part comes from Old French "notice," from Latin "notitia," meaning knowledge or acquaintance, and it entered English with the sense of attention or observation. The second part is the ordinary English "board," a flat piece of wood or other material, here used for a surface on which things are pinned or posted. Put together, the compound describes a board on which notices are displayed, a plain and transparent piece of naming. Its plural simply adds the usual "-s" to make it refer to more than one such board, which is why the form is so unremarkable in use.
Synonyms: bulletin boards, message boards
