  2. An administrative area in central England characterized by its blend of urban centers and rural landscapes
  3. A geographic region in England distinguished by its cultural heritage and local governance structure

Etymology: Northamptonshire takes its name from its county town, Northampton, which is itself older than the county. The town's name comes from Old English words meaning roughly "north homestead" or "northern settlement," describing its place relative to the Hampton-type settlements of the region. The county was named by adding "shire," the Old English word for a district or administrative area, to that town name, giving "Norðhamtunscir" in Old English. The pattern is a common one in England. Many shires take their names from a principal town, so the county is named after the place where its administration was based, not after any feature of the landscape. The name therefore reflects the importance of Northampton as a centre of local government long before the modern county boundaries were drawn.
