Normalisers

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. Substances or devices that bring things back to a standard, usual or balanced state, such as chemicals that adjust acidity or electrical components that stabilise signals
  2. Agents or mechanisms that regulate and restore conditions to a typical or expected level, used across chemistry, electronics and statistics
  3. Tools or compounds designed to make something conform to a norm, whether by adjusting a chemical balance or smoothing out irregular data values

Etymology: "Normalisers" is simply the plural of "normaliser", the British spelling of "normalizer", a thing or person that normalises. The singular is formed by adding the agent suffix "-er" to "normalise", which in turn comes from "normal" with the verb-forming suffix "-ise" (or "-ize"). Because the plural adds only an "-s", its history is that of the singular, and the story of "normal" and its verb is what gives the word its meaning.

Synonyms: normalizer, standardizer
