Etymology: "Nonwavering" is a plain formation: the prefix "non-" attached to "wavering," the present participle of "waver." "Waver" traces back to the Middle English "waveren," meaning to move unsteadily back and forth, which is the same image of a flag or flame swaying in the wind. "Wavering" in its extended sense of hesitating between options grew out of that physical motion, so a person who wavers is one whose resolve sways the way a loose banner does. Adding "non-" simply turns that wobbling into its opposite, describing a resolve that stays fixed however long the pressure lasts. The construction is transparent: no sound change or shift in meaning is hidden inside it, and the word is built from parts that were already fully English.
