Etymology: "Nonsaline" is simply the English prefix "non-", meaning "not," attached to "saline," which comes from the Latin "salinus," "of salt," itself built on "sal," "salt." Put together, the word means "not saline," a plain logical negation rather than a term with a colorful history. The second half carries the older story. "Saline" entered English as a word for salt-containing substances, and its Latin base "sal" is also the ancestor of "salary" and "sauce," so the same ancient word for salt has shaped vocabulary about pay, seasoning and brine. "Nonsaline" applies the negating prefix to that base, which is why it sits comfortably in technical contexts such as describing freshwater or soils with little salt.
