Etymology: "Noninvolvements" is the plural of "noninvolvement," a noun meaning the state of not taking part in something. The word is built from the prefix "non-," meaning "not," attached to "involvement," which itself comes from "involve." That verb ultimately traces back to the Latin "involvere," meaning "to roll up" or "to wrap in," formed from "in-" ("into") and "volvere" ("to roll"). So the original sense is physical: something wrapped or enfolded, and only later a figurative sense of being entangled in affairs. Putting "non-" in front of "involvement" produces a negation of that entanglement, so a noninvolvement is literally the absence of being rolled up in a matter. The plural form simply counts separate instances of such abstention, as in several distinct refusals to get drawn into a dispute.
