Etymology: "Noninvolved" is a simple formation: the prefix "non-," meaning "not," attached to "involved," the past participle of "involve." The English prefix "non-" has been used freely since the 19th century to negate existing words, which is why it attaches so readily to adjectives like this one. "Involved" itself comes from the Latin "involvere," meaning "to roll up" or "to wrap in," built from "in-" and "volvere," "to roll." That physical sense of wrapping or enfolding is the root of the whole family. Something involved was once literally rolled into something else, and the sense shifted over time toward being entangled or implicated in an affair. "Noninvolved" therefore describes someone who has not been rolled into the matter at hand, standing apart from it rather than wrapped up in it.
