- The state marked by nonexistence of habitual behavior; a status indicating actions are not performed routinely; describing a pattern of irregular or uncommon activity
Etymology: The word is a plain English formation: the negating prefix "non-", from Latin "non" meaning "not", attached to "habit". "Habit" came into English through Old French from Latin "habitus", the past participle of "habere", "to have" or "to hold." The original sense was closer to a condition or bearing a person holds than to a repeated action, and the routine sense developed from that. Adding "non-" simply reverses the idea: a state in which something is not held as a regular practice.
