Etymology: NLP is an abbreviation, and its letters are the whole story: it stands for "natural language processing," a field of computing concerned with getting machines to read, parse and generate human speech and writing. The term itself is much younger than the field's roots. Nobody in the 1950s called machine translation "NLP"; the phrase and its abbreviation became common in the 1980s and 1990s, when the field shifted from hand-written grammar rules toward statistical methods. The abbreviation follows a well-established pattern in computing and mathematics, where long descriptive names are shortened to their initials, as with "AI" or "GPS." The "natural" in the name is there to distinguish human languages such as English or Mandarin from formal languages like programming code, which are designed with strict, unambiguous rules. Early work often went by other labels, such as "computational linguistics," which remains a close relative of the field today.
