Etymology: Nitrogen itself was named in the 1790s by the French chemist Jean-Antoine Chaptal, who built it from Greek roots meaning "niter-former" or "saltpeter-former", reflecting the mineral nitre (sodium or potassium nitrate) that was then its best-known source.
