Etymology: This is the past tense and past participle of "niggard," a verb meaning to be stingy with money, which in turn comes from a noun for a miser. That noun entered Middle English as "nigard," possibly from Scandinavian, where Old Icelandic had "hnøggr" ("miserly"). Both trace back to a Proto-Germanic root, "hnauwjaz," which also gave Old English "hneaw" ("stingy"). Despite its resemblance to an offensive racial slur, the word has no connection to it.
